Library Instruction Information for Faculty Members:
The Who? What? Why? When? and Where?

Who needs it?

  • Freshmen and other new students need an introduction to research procedures in general and our library
    resources in particular.
  • Training in library resources is, however, appropriate at all levels of courses, including graduate level.
  • In fact, the world of information resources is changing so rapidly that everyone--not just students--can benefit from regular instructional updates!

What is Library Instruction?
Library instruction is the process of training library users how to approach information problems, how to use basic reference tools--both electronic and printed--and how to find resources in the Ohio University Libraries.

Why do students need it?
Although most students have had some training in library use, many of them . . .

  • are unfamiliar with large academic libraries
  • have no concept of how to design an effective search strategy
  • need an introduction to ALICE, our online computer system, and to the OhioLINK system
  • can benefit greatly from learning how to use electronic databases
  • don't know how to choose appropriate indexes and abstracts
  • cannot use web search tools such as Yahoo or Google effectively

When should it be given?
Library instruction is most effective when a student has a specific library-related assignment for a class. Library instruction outside of such a context tends to be quickly forgotten.

Types of Library Instruction
We offer a wide variety of materials and services designed to help students and faculty use the Library most effectively. If you have any questions about the Library Instruction program, please contact Instructional Librarian Julia Robinson at ext. 222 or e-mail at robinsj1@ohio.edu.

Course-Related Instruction
Instruction is best done at the point of need and when students are assigned to do research. We can acquaint your students with both electronic and printed resources, and research methods. Contact Julia Robinson to schedule a class: robinsj1@ohio.edu or 740-654-6711, x 222.

Reference Service
Walk-in reference service is provided in all public service areas of the Library. The Reference Desk on the Upper Level of the Library can answer specific questions; provide general assistance with research topics; help in the use of indexes, subject headings, the use of ALICE, etc.; explain how to use reference works; and suggest additional information resources.

Chat Reference
Ask your questions online by connecting to a web-based chat session staffed by OhioLINK librarians. Available hours are:

  • Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Saturday: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Email Reference
You can get a Ask your questions by e-mail: library@lancaster.ohio.edu and we'll reply.

Workshops
From time to time the Library sponsors workshops for faculty on a variety of topics. We would be pleased to design workshops that meet your needs as well.

Watch for announcements or contact Instructional Librarian Julia Robinson at ext. 222 or by e-mail at: robinsj1@ohio.edu.

Printed Materials
We can design handouts that can help you students succeed when doing research. This kind of endeavor requires the collaboration of faculty and librarians to be effective.

Consultation
Library assignments can become frustrating to students if the materials are not available when needed or if the assignments are poorly designed around what is available in our Library. Librarians are happy to work with faculty in devising assignments that will best meet the needs of a particular course and, at the same time, most fruitfully exploit the Library's resources.
