How Can an Inquiry Based Approach Promote Thinking in All Learners?
This course is designed to provide K-8 teachers with an understanding of inquiry incorporating process skills aligned with methods for content delivery. After a brief review of basic thinking models (Socratic Method, Bloom’s Taxonomy, the Scientific Method, Keene’s Mosaic of Thought, and current brain research (Jensen, Levine)), the focus will shift to a meaningful application of the state standards to classroom learning. Utilizing specific strategies designed to foster original thinking, engage learners in the discovery of knowledge, and heighten the metacognitive process teachers will create and implement stimulating lesson plans guiding their students to make meaningful content to life connections. A final, synthesizing step for all lessons will result in the production and sharing of original ideas—that is students will become producers rather than consumers of information. Assignments will incorporate practical hands-on opportunities for reciprocal teaching through differentiation. Instructors: Dianne McCune and Stephanie Wooddell.
