Cathy Pate’s history professor told her that she ‘belonged in academia.’
Thanks to the “Free Your Promise” promotion at Ohio University Lancaster Campus and the encouragement of her professor, Pate completed the free course and enrolled full time. She is well on her way to becoming a special education teacher.
Prospective adult students again may enroll in a class for free winter quarter at Ohio University Lancaster Campus and Pickerington Center.
The “Free Your Promise” program allows adults who meet one of the following criteria to enroll in the class of their choosing at no tuition cost. A prospective student must be at least 25 years old, or a parent, or a military veteran, or a former Ohio University student who has not received a degree or attended in the last five years.
Graduate courses and textbooks and materials are not included. The Campus and Center will waive the $20 application fee.
Ursula LaVeck, Campaign Manager at United Way of Fairfield County, returned to the Lancaster Campus to “jump start the process” toward completing her degree. “It was perfect for me,” she said. LaVeck took her final two classes spring quarter and earned her baccalaureate degree in business, with a major in finance.
“Nontraditional (adult) students often face obstacles in returning to school or starting college. This program eliminates the financial roadblock some students face,” said Pat Fox, Enrollment Manager at the Lancaster Campus.
“Free Your Promise” is modeled after similar programs launched at Ohio University’s campuses in Chillicothe and Zanesville.
Students may enroll in the course of their choice, provided they meet the pre-requisites for the class. Daytime and evening courses are available in a wide variety of subject areas. The schedule may be accessed online at www.lancaster.ohiou.edu under quick links. Print copies are available onsite.
Since the Lancaster Campus and Pickerington Center offer open admission, students need only proof of a GED or a high school transcript. Kim Jeffers, Transition Advisor at the Lancaster Campus, will meet with each student to discuss his or her eligibility for the free course and to develop an academic plan.
Jeffers, who enrolled at the local campus as a nontraditional student, completed her degree and managed the campus daycare facility.
Career services also are available. Jeffers assists students in determining interests through online assessment tools and offers job search strategies.
Last year 67 students enrolled through the “Free Your Promise” program. A few secured jobs immediately and withdrew from class. Jeffers notes that most of the students did very well, earning As and Bs, and 13 continued, scheduling classes spring quarter.
The deadline for enrolling in the program is December 1, 2009, so that, as Jeffers notes, students have time to meet with her and discuss their goals and options.
Jeffers can be reached at 740.654.6711 or 888.446.4468, ext. 215.
